Military Hospital V.R. 76, Ris-Orangis, France: male patient with wounded elbow. Photograph, 1916. The lettering is hand-written on facing folio Lettering continued: "25eur Regument (?) d'Infanterie. Wounded at Verdun - July 26th 1916. Was resting in reserve when a terrific bomb burst over the railway siding where Left Henry and his party were resting. He was knocked over with the shock, but did not lose consciousness. Seven of his comrades were killed and he had three very bad wounds through the elbow" Poilu. Better known as Blue Devils. Le Marchal des Logis Henry. ... (Poilu meaning hirsute or extremely hairy). Folio bears number: 28 The military hospital, V.R. 76 was founded in 1915 by the Hon. Lady Johnstone and Mr Harold J. Reckitt. Situated at Ris-Orangis (12 miles south of Paris), treating only surgical cases, the hospital was the operating centre for a group of nine hospitals attached to it. The hospital closed in 1918 Contained in an album of photographs depicting the buildings, patients and staff of the French Military Hospital, V.R. 76 at Ris-Orangis, France, 1916.
