DescriptionColumn Krates by the Pan Painter Cult around the Phallus?, Altes Museum Berlin (5399802696).jpg
Etruria (Italy), acquired in 1891
Clay, Attic red-figure, around 470 BC
Naked woman (hetaera?) carries an enourmous phallus. The depiction on the front side evidences the worship of hermai as it was practised in many places, such as in the palaestra. The picture on the reserve is extremely rare in this form and therefore has been interpreted in various ways: Some connect it with a procession during the festival of the Haloa in Eleusis near Athens, at which phalloi were carried; addresses were Demeter and Dionysus and the plea for fertility was an important aspect. Other identify the woman as a hetaera or porne (prostitute) with an olisbos, an artificial phallus.
